House & Hawk - A Toast To Life

Hello again friends! I wanted to alert anyone who still reads/visits this blog that my band House & Hawk has released it's second LP "A Toast To Life" - Anyone who enjoyed our first album will love our new material. It spans the range of crudely recorded lo-fi tracks to big studio recordings across many music genres. Fans of Guided By Voices, Sebadoh, 80's Flying Nun and The Clean will enjoy this album.

You can download the album for FREE here (though donations are appreciated):

House & Hawk - Self Titled LP

What have I been up to recently? Well it's funny you should ask that. I just finished a new record with my friend Alexander Strung for our new music project called House & Hawk. The album is done lo-fi four track style and was recorded over much of 2012-2013. If you love the music I've been featured on Kiwi Tapes and Decrepit Tapes over the years all of those musical reference points inform the sound of this album.

The album is available for FREE streaming and download here on band camp:

Donations are greatly appreciated and will go toward funding future projects with this band. Thanks in advance for anyone who listens!

On The Horizon: The Dead C. - Armed Courage

There's no one more excited than me that The Dead C are experiencing a late-career renaissance with fantastic re-issues on the Ba Da Bing! and Siltbreeze labels, a split release featuring archival with Rangda and the first magazine cover story (The Wire) in the band's 20+ year history. In addition to the much needed reappraisals of their back catalog the Dead C have also been quietly releasing some of their best new music in ages starting with 2009's Secret Earth and 2010's all-instrumental Patience. After a bit of a lay-off the Dead C will be back on September 3rd with Armed Courage a new release featuring 2 extended pieces that harken back to the Harsh 70's Reality days while still evolving and moving the Dead C agenda forward. After some misguided forays into electronic music in the early 2000's it seems the Dead C are back to doing what they do best: making a huge fucking racket. When it comes to extended noise improvs no one does it quite like they do.

Playthings - Live 1981

Playthings were an early 80's New Zealand punk group fronted by Jay Clarkson (The Expendables, Breathing Cage) and Janine Soundercock. They released two 7 inch singles on Flying Nun (Coloured & Bird's Eye View) and they released this limited "official" bootleg of a 1981 live recording recorded at the famous Gladstone Venue (also noteworthy for featuring famous early gigs from The Clean, The Pin Group and The Gordons).

The excellent cut "Stand Up / Sit Down" was featured on last year's excellent Time To Go compilation and after hearing that song again in a different context I was reminded of how great this group was and what a shame it was that they seemingly got lost in the shuffle of that early scene. Lots of excellent straight forward punk numbers throughout with a few highly angular post-punk songs to keep things fresh. As far as I can tell in my research this is the only group Janine ever played in which is a shame because her vocals are excellent.

It's back!

Hello everyone, long time no speak!

Decrepit Tapes is back... again. I am eager to start posting again and to once again share the nuggets of joy I have uncovered during my travels.

I do not fault you if you approach any commitment I make to posting with some degree of skepticism... HOWEVER... I must assure you all that I am now unemployed (for the time being) and now have a great deal of free time on my hands.

Look forward to new posts very soon!

A quick sidebar: Does anyone know how to work around this awful compression that Blogger puts on uploaded images? I've tried everything and it makes it all look super pixelated and awful. Any help would be appreciated!

Welcome Back / Greetings From Cowtown

After what can only be called an insanely long hiatus Decrepit Tapes is back with a new podcast about the amazing esoteric music that has come from Columbus, Ohio over these past few decades. This podcast was inspired in part by the fine folks at IndieTorrents and thank you to some of it's members for contributing some of this material.

More podcasts will be on the way and some will include commentary and stay tuned for a bunch of other features.

Podcast for 6.5.11 - Robert Pollard

After a substantial delay caused by computer issues the Robert Pollard podcast is finally ready for your listening pleasure. This particular podcast features between track commentary from yours truly. My hope is that people who have previously written off Bob's post-GBV solo career will find something to love and will investigate some of his newer material further. Feedback on how future podcasts could be improved is always appreciated.
